UFC 319 Recap

 Article written by Scottie Kieffer

UFC 319 is in the books, and what a night it was. We have a new Middleweight Champion in Khamzat Chimaev in dominant fashion, Back-to-Back Spinning elbow knockouts, and so many upsets. Let's review the main card and touch on the top stories of the prelims.

In the Main Event, Dricus Du Plessis was unable to make his 3rd defense of his middleweight title as Khamzat Chimaev completely dominated his way to his first title win. Chimaev becomes the first UFC Fighter from Chechnya to win a UFC belt and the 3rd middleweight in UFC history to win the belt with an undefeated record of 15-0. (Israel Adesanya and Chris Weidman) In a fight where he was heavily favored in the sportsbooks, Chimaev finished the fight with almost 22 minutes of control time, the second most in UFC history, and an incredible 12 takedowns, along with over 500 Strikes. DDP just couldn't match the powerful wrestling of Khamzat and lost on all 3 score cards 50-44. Next up for Khamzat, who said he would be willing to fight on UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, should be the winner of Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho on September 6th. As for Dricus, a fight with Renier De Ridder could be on the books, but maybe he would take on the loser of Imavov/Borralho

The rest of the main card included a major upset victory by Tim Elliott, who caught former Rizen champion Kai Asakara for a submission in the 2nd round. An embarrassing loss by Kai, who might see himself out of the UFC after 2 bad fights. Elliot, at 38 years old, has 1 contract left on his contract. With 4 of his last fights being wins, he deserves a step up. Give him Amir Albazi or Steve Erceg.  Michael Page dances his way to a decision win over Jared Cannonier. I mean that literally. MVP danced and taunted his way to a disrespectful win that might put him up against another fighter on this card, Carlos Prates, who knocked out Geoff Neal with a Spinning elbow late in the first round. The Fighting Nerd Prates was called out by MVP in his press conference, but I’d rather see him vs the guy Prates called out in the octagon. Former welterweight champion Leon Edwards. You know who else got a major upset and the other spinning elbow on this card. Lerone Murphy, who ruined the debut of Aaron Pico. With this win, Murphy puts himself next in line for the featherweight title against Alexander Volkanovski, who accepted the callout on his YouTube channel after the event.

On the prelims, Chase Hooper fell victim to a late KO by Alex Hernandez, Joseph Morales won The Ultimate Fighter Finale, being a +500 dog, and after signing with the company on Tuesday, Basisangur Susurkaev goes 2-2 on the week after a front kick KO on Dana White contender Series to a 2nd round Submission in Chicago.

After all that, we move to Shanghai for Coffee and Combat with the next card starting at 6 AM EST with a Light Heavyweight contender fight between Johnny Walker and Zhang Mingyang. Also, the countdown to UFC 320 begins with the event being over a month away, so we wait for the rematch of Alex Pereira and the Light Heavyweight Champion Magomed Ankalaev.
