As the new NHL season is getting ready to begin, we may be seeing the final years of a legend of the sport. Sidney Crosby walks into the first season of his new 2-year contract, which might be the last of his career. While he might be at the end of his Hall of Fame-worthy career, he wants to make one last push for Lord Stanley, but with the team in Pittsburgh, that may not be a possibility. There's really no expectation for this Penguins team. They didn’t make any game-changing moves, only bringing in defensive help in Connor Clifton from Buffalo and Matt Dumba from Dallas. With the lack of moves, it seems like the Penguins are going for the lottery once again in the hope of getting Gavin McKenna.
With how bad the team might be, trade speculation for Crosby had been at an all-time high. Last trade deadline, there was a major rumor that Sid the Kid was going to find a new home. He commented on Elliotte Friedman’s podcast “32 Thoughts” that “That's the thing that sucks about losing. When you lose, that’s what comes with losing — that speculation. When you win, there’s no speculation. It’s: ‘Who are they picking up? Who is the deadline acquisition?’ When you lose, it’s: ‘Who’s going?’ That’s the crappy part.” So if it is true that Sidney Crosby could be traded, let’s explore some potential trade destinations. Frank Seravalli from Bleacher Report said that the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, and Colorado Avalanche have been discussed in regards to a Crosby trade, so let's break it down team by team.
The team that makes the most sense is the Avalanche. The team is looking to get back to their cup-winning ways, and Crosby would definitely help with that. That's not the only reason why he would want to go there. Sid is a great friend of their Captain, Nathan MacKinnon, as they are both from Nova Scotia in Canada.
The other team that makes sense to me is Les Canadiens de Montréal. The Canadiens are trying to get back to the Cup since they haven't made it back since the Covid bubble. Crosby has said in the past that he grew up a Canadiens fan, so a move to Montreal would fulfill his childhood dream.
The Kings to me don't make sense. While Croby would be able to help them make it out of the first round, the team around him is not as good as past Penguin Cup winners. We’re talking about a team that can’t beat the Oilers.
Trade rumors are surely in the air for Crosby. It would be great for the sport to see him back on top again, but a side of me wants him to retire in Pittsburgh. It's hard to see him in any other sweater lifting the cup. But if Crosby wants to reach the mountain top once again and ride off into the sunset, it just might have to be with another team.
