It's been an exciting week in the windy city of Chicago in the sports world overall. |
In case you didn't because maybe you didn't care or were asleep under a rock, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in Game 6 to claim the title of 2015 Stanley Cup Champions and have also solidified themselves in history as the hockey dynasty of 2010s with this being their third Stanley Cup in six years. Just yesterday, Blackhawks' fans poured into the streets of the city to watch the parade, and then rallied at Soldier Field to celebrate the cup with the team.
So on one side, we have to happy about watching Steve Kerr win his first NBA title in his rookie year as a head coach. Steve Kerr is known by most of us as being one of the Chicago Bulls' point guards that came off the bench to hit quick three pointers for Phil Jackson from 1993-1998, where he won the team's last three championships from 1996-1998.

For all the flock this city gets, the Chicago Blackhawks' Stanley Cup wins are always a great way to bring us together. |
However, the next day brought the city of Chicago and Chicago Bulls fans' the same type of elation as the 2015 NBA Finals went into Game 6 between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, in which Cleveland fell to Golden State 105-97 to claim their first NBA title in almost 40 years. So how does Golden State's win impact Chicago's happiness? Well there are two ways:
1) former Chicago Bulls' point guard and Golden State's head coach Steve Kerr was able to win the NBA championship in his rookie season as a head coach.
2) the so-called "best player in the world" LeBron James (which as of now, he is the best) got all the way back to the NBA Finals with another superpower team and stopped short for the third time.

After his run with the Bulls, he was then traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 1999 where he won a fourth straight championship with head coach Gregg Popovich, veteran center "The Admiral" Dave Robinson, and young superstar forward/center Tim Duncan. He then went to Portland for two years, but eventually headed back to the Spurs in 2003 to capture his fifth NBA title as a player.
So with all those rings and memories to hold onto, Kerr now adds another ring and what will hopefully be one of many more memories to come in winning the NBA title as the head coach of Golden State. However, he started making championship memories here in the windy city, so we should all stand and cheer proudly as a former Chicago Bull helps perpetuate himself into history.
As for the other side, we were able to witness another NBA Finals loss for LeBron James. Now if you have read any of my articles on the NBA or know the type of person I am, then you know how much of a bad taste I feel LeBron James leaves in my mouth. Although, I'll have it said that I respect LeBron James as an athlete and basketball player. It's that personality of trying be more a celebrity than a player of the game that really makes my head spin around.

"I'm the best player in the World." |
LeBron James was Cleveland's No.1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft out of high school and retained the title as the "hometown hero" in bringing the Cavaliers back into relevance and making them look as though they are a dominant team. But once 2010 came... well we all know what happened then. James decides to play the "Where Will I Go?" game show, only to finally decide to go to the Miami Heat, where he had been planning to go with forward/center Chris Bosh and play with shooting guard Dwyane Wade since the All-Star break the previous season.

This face of LeBron James just says it all about the past season thus far. |
After winning two straight titles with the Heat and being upended by the Spurs in 2014, James decided to hit free agency and sign back with his old team in order to try and bring the championship magic with him to his hometown of Cleveland. Once again, he was joining up with another "Big Three" in point guard Kyrie Irving and then being joined by forward/center Kevin Love after he was traded to Cleveland by the Minnesota Timberwolves. But it was obvious that the chemistry was never going to be the same, the coaching was not up to par at all, and there was not enough coming off the bench to support and relieve the starters.
Now if you're a Chicago Bulls' fan of any kind, then you know that there is a type of hatred that we have for LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Not to say that the rest of the NBA does not have any kind of hatred for LeBron James, but we seem to have a special type of hate that we love to save for when James and Cleveland come to town. So it's no surprise that when James lost in the Finals against the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and then again in 2014 against the San Antonio Spurs that I found myself jumping off joy, even though he wasn't in Cleveland those years because when it comes to LeBron, the hatred just carried over to South Beach. Now with a 2-4 NBA Finals record, questions will once again begin to stir about the team, his loyalty, and so much more.
So I say embrace the moments we have had this week my fellow fans of Chicago. Let us be able to take in the beautiful scent of a championship from our Chicago Blackhawks and the sweet taste of "Take That!" thanks to Steve Kerr and his Golden State Warriors taking it to LeBron James and handing him another season that can be best described in one way:
